The Witch golf course near Myrtle Beach, SC was designed by Dan Maples and is appropriately named for its bewitching obstacles and tantalizing challenges. However, this is an extremely attractive golf course near Myrtle Beach that overflows with a natural low country environment. Hidden away in 500 acres of the swampy forests of Conway, SC, visitors get a break from the beach as they are taken back to the solitude of nature.
Travel deep into the woods equipped with your clubs as you listen to the menacing resonance coming from the swamp. Sounds of the bullfrog, sightings of alligators, eagles and other wild creatures just add to the witching atmosphere. Enjoy riding on paths and the more than 4,000 feet of bridges while making your way from hole to hole. The Witch is a rare place where man can commune with nature without the typical distractions of civilization. The 10th hole that runs along Highway 544 with a smattering of stores will bring forth a reminder of outside civilization. But don’t sweat it! That’s just there to reassure that the rest of the world is still near by. You’ll shortly find yourself once again tucked away in the enchanting forest of The Witch.
The delightful 1st and 9th holes of The Witch are islands surrounded by water. Hole #9 is a par-4 with a wide fairway and sharp dogleg over the marsh. Oyster shell bunkers and dramatic elevation changes combined with an abundance of sand, waste and narrow fairways provide beautiful and challenging play. The 15th hole with its left dogleg is potentially the favored hole of the course with a great deal of change in elevation playing downhill to the green.
The front and back nines each present a unique set of attributes that keep the course interesting and motivating. The front nine runs through the Waccamaw Swamp with a great deal of water coming into play, while the back nine brings a dryer landscape of sand dunes that provide varied natural elevations. Golfers will encounter more than forty feet of natural elevation changes. Each hole on the Witch Course brings a new experience much different than the last, and a great contrast to the next. The course is 6,072 yards, has a rating of 71.2, slope of 133 and par-71.
Those who come to The Witch with high expectations do not walk away disappointed. The greens have some interesting slopes with little undulation and the course is in superb shape. The avid golfer that believes that courses should be judged on how many holes you can remember afterward, will be very pleased. The Witch has more than its share.
The par-4, 373 yard, 9th hole gives players a close up view of the swamp. Wetlands come into play off the tee and on the approach, along with a slight left dogleg that presents the challenge of making it to the right side of the fairway to avoid a cypress swamp on the left. The green is protected by two bunkers. Though this hole is not especially long, it does require a good deal of strategy. Hole #13 offers a par-5, 520 yard straightway with a green that slopes towards the wetlands. The two bunkers on the right politely collect any short shots. The 15th hole is a par-4 with a blind landing area that wraps around the trees. Big hitters will need to watch out for the marsh. Hole #4 is a par-4 with 386 yards. Water runs down the left side with a couple of bunkers on the right. The scenery on this hole is fabulous, especially if you catch it as the sun is setting. Water comes into play from the tee and often brings a tricky wind off the water. With the course being a bit isolated with little human contact, beverage carts make their way around to provide refreshment at least twice during each nine. Hole #13 also offers relief as it winds a path by the clubhouse if you’re in need of a brief respite.
Dan Maples had a true stroke of genius when he designed this course in the middle of undisturbed swampland. Golfers are drawn to the fact that The Witch is rather unique with a refreshing and welcome atmosphere. It received the impressive and hard to reach rating of 4.5 Stars from Golf Digest in their “Places To Play” guide. The many unforgettable experiences that will be gained at this course are highly worthy of this honor. Golfers at all levels of expertise will receive an unforgettable golf outing.
The Witch is always well staffed no matter how full or sparse the daily schedule. They are there when you need them and stay out of your way when you don’t.
