id="more-276">

If you can arrange it, be there on the days that they feed Utan, King of the Crocs. He’s a giant crocodile, the largest in the United States. This 20-foot long amazing creature is quite a sight to see, and watching him eat only adds to the overall experience. On last check, he eats on Wednesday and Saturday, but be sure to check on that before you go. You’ll want to get there at least 20 minutes early to secure a good spot to watch.

The Serpentarium is said to be one of the best reptile houses of any zoological park. It features a great display with 38 species of amazing snakes including a green anaconda, the largest species of snake in the world. Visitors will also find various other serpents such as the python, king cobra, rattlesnake and rainbow boa.

Their beautiful Galapagos tortoises are among the favorites at the park. Gabby, the 52 year old female, is the largest one at 450 pounds. There are two Aldabra tortoises as well.

The park also showcases giant alligator snapping turtles, the pig nose turtle, rhinoceros iguana, gila monsters and African bullfrogs, along with many other beautiful creatures. Huntington Beach State Park is located in Murrells Inlet and offers an incredible nature garden, education center, picnic areas, campgrounds, and more and is among the best things to do near Myrtle Beach, SC.

Huntington Beach State Park can be found at the southern end of the Grand Strand of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet. Within the park, visitors will find Atalaya, a Spanish style former home of the American sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington and her husband and philanthropist, Archer Huntington. The Huntingtons also established the gorgeous Brookgreen Gardens that are located nearby.

The park is a nature lover’s paradise with its fresh water lagoon, maritime forest, salt marsh and beach. Upon entering the park from the causeway, the right side reveals Mullet Pond, a managed freshwater marsh. On the left side lies the salt marsh. Each of these features provide excellent samples of the natural coastal environment of South Carolina.

Both the zealous and amateur bird watcher will eagerly seek out the numerous fowl of this area that claims to be one of the finest bird watching sites on the East Coast. The birds show up throughout the year and many of the best sightings have been reported during the winter months.

The freshwater side of the causeway often rewards bird watchers with a view of a bald eagle. There is reportedly an eagle pair nesting in Brookgreen Gardens that utilize the park’s wetlands as their feeding grounds. One of their favorite methods of garnering food is to steal from other birds, which can be quite entertaining to observe. A variety of ducks inhabit this beach area during the winter. The jetty at the northern end of the park attracts species such as razorbills and black guillemots, horned grebes and purple sandpipers. Other shorebirds such as the endangered piping plover are sometimes seen along the beach area.

The popular campgrounds at Huntington Beach State Park provide over 100 sites for RV camping and six sites with tent pads. Fishing is a popular pastime at the park as enthusiasts enjoy casting from the jetty and surf fishing on the beach. For those who prefer to take out a boat, there is a boat ramp about a mile from the park entrance.

Sheltered picnic areas are available for families or groups to get together. There is a fee to reserve each of these three shelters. If the shelters are not reserved, they can be used on a first come basis. The park store provides a convenient location for limited groceries, firewood, crabbing nets and snacks.

The Education Center is a 2,500 square foot building featuring a saltwater fish tank and a live baby alligator along with other exhibits. The center seeks to inform guests of the interdependent relationship between humans and the natural coastal environment.

The Interpretive Trail begins at the parking area with a leisurely walk to a boardwalk that extends onto a freshwater lagoon. This is a great place to see many species of birds. Hikers like to take advantage of the Sandpiper Pond Trail that provides a two-mile excursion throughout the park. The trail goes along parts of the natural beach, through the coastal forest filled with oaks, cedars and creeping vines, a boardwalk and a saltwater pond with observation towers. Those who wish to extend their hike, can continue on to Murrells Inlet Jetty creating a six mile trail.

Huntington State Park offers quite a few interesting programs that include beach combing to search for seashells and their inhabitants. The Atalaya tour lets visitors know how the home helped the local community through some tough years and how it inspired art. Bird watchers will want to join the walk along the causeway and the salt marsh in search for interesting birds. The Alligators program is a one-hour walking tour on the causeway in search for these reptiles as they sun, feed or swim through the water. There have even been occasions of alligators being seen crossing the causeway. Other programs focus on sea turtles, fish printing art, snakes and reptiles. Coastal Kayaking is great for even beginners to participate in a two-hour tour of the salt marsh.

Huntington Beach State Park is a terrific place to get away from the crowds and just enjoy the beautiful undisturbed nature of Myrtle Beach. The parcel of land that these gardens now inhabit originally consisted of four rice plantations that the Huntingtons purchased to display Anna’s sculptures.

As her endeavor grew, this undertaking turned into the first public sculpture garden in American. Since that time, it has expanded into the largest outdoor collection of American figurative sculptures in the world, with over 1200 pieces created by 350 sculptors. These works of art range in dates from the early nineteenth century to present day. It’s a great idea to take the time at the beginning of your visit to view the video that will give an overall summary of the history and layout of the Gardens. The information in the video prepares guests to best enjoy Brookgreen.

The magnificent sculptures are not the only wonders that visitors marvel over at Brookgreen Gardens. The gorgeous grounds that are designed around walkways laid out by Anna Huntington, are considered among our country’s most celebrated botanical showings. The land throughout the Gardens consists of a diverse mix of salt marsh, forested swamps, fresh tidal swamps and sandy ridges. The Live Oak Allee garden is an absolute favorite of many guests. The ancient oak trees that line this extraordinarily beautiful garden path were planted in the 1700′s and are nearly 300 years old. It is quite a marvelous sight to see.

Anna Huntington went to great lengths to create her wondrous sculpture garden and even designed it in the shape of a spread wing butterfly. The lower right wing is the location of the Dorothy P. Peace Garden room for Children. The lower left wing is home to The Kitchen Garden.

A departure from the butterfly wings will lead garden explorers to areas such as The Dogwood Garden and The Palmetto Garden that were completed in 1945 and 1950 respectively. The whimsical Fountain of the Muses Garden is one of the most recent additions which features sculptures of the sisters of Greek mythology.

In addition to the gardens and sculptures, the grounds also have a small animal zoo. The Lowcountry Zoo is noted as the only zoo on the coast of North and South Carolina that is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. This organization only accepts zoos that meet their very high standards of animal care and wildlife preservation. The inhabitants of the zoo include otters, alligators, foxes, eagles and owls. Horses, cows, sheep, chickens and wild turkeys also find homes there. All of the wondrous creatures in this zoo were either bred in captivity at an accredited institution or were obtained from a wildlife rehabilitation organization due to the result of a major injury. These animals are unable to survive in the wild and are provided safe and natural habitats at The Lowcountry Zoo. The Cypress Aviary is built over the cypress swamp and can be viewed from a raised boardwalk. Various birds can be viewed in their natural habitat as the feed, fly and rest.

The pontoon boat ride is a popular attraction at the Gardens. This hour long excursion gives the opportunity to travel through the old rice fields while viewing birds, alligators and small animals that make their home in the swampland. There is also an all-terrain vehicle ride back in history. Both of these worthwhile adventures are available for an additional fee.

The hands-on Children’s Discovery Center provides enthralling entertainment for the younger crowd. The kids can spend hours engrossed in the activities and displays.

Stop in for a light meal of delicious local fare at the Garden’s restaurant and maybe even indulge in a nice glass of wine. A picnic area is also available. Nighttime is a great time to visit with the lighted sculptures and water areas.

Tickets are reasonably priced and are good for seven days. Many visitors return several times during their trip to Myrtle Beach. There is so much to see that they often don’t get to all of it in one day. There is easily two or three days enjoyment in these huge gardens. Many love to schedule a second trip as the sun goes down to enjoy the evening ambiance at the Gardens. Even on lightly rainy days Brookgreen is not always empty as people can be seen equipped with their raincoats and umbrellas enjoying the Gardens while strolling in the rain.

There’s lot of walking to get around the extensive Brookgreen Gardens. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as you prepare for your adventure through these beautiful, natural and artistic wonders. Your trip to Brookgreen Gardens in Myrtle Beach, SC is sure to lead to a tranquil and serene experience that will be thought provoking, to say the least.
<div

It is also the home of a free wildlife and living tiger museum in the T.I.G.E.R.S Preservation Station. Not only are visitors encouraged to enjoy the museum at no cost, but they also get to see some of the world’s most rare tigers. The Bengal tiger, Siberian tiger and Royal White Bengal tiger can all be viewed in their outdoor environment. They also have a Golden Tabby tiger which is the most rare tiger in the world.

Tiger trainers are available to answer questions and provide fascinating information about these beautiful feline creatures. Apes are also among those animals at the Preservation Station. As an opportunity to allow visitors to help support their efforts of conserving and breeding tigers, a photographer is always on hand to take pictures of visitors and their families or friends snuggling up face to face with a baby tiger or an ape. The cost of $59 is pretty pricey for one 8 x 10 shot, but when you consider that you actually get up close and hold one of these wondrous creatures, it’s hard to put a price on it. Guests are happy to know that the proceeds go to help the preservation of the tigers. Be sure to check for coupons as you’re visiting the Grand Strand for discounts. They can be found in the Monster and Sunny Day coupon books.

There is another option available that will greatly enhance your experience at T.I.G.E.R.S. In addition to the Preservation Station at Barefoot Landing, they also have a 50-acre preserve in Myrtle Beach that offers the Wild Encounters Tour. Those people who take part in this preserve are almost speechless as they describe their time spent getting to know the tigers, leopards, orangutan, wolves and chimpanzees.

This adventure will be a once in a life time event for most who choose to go. The price is an extravagant $199 per person. But those who report back say that it was more than worth the cost. Photo and video opportunities are also available at the preserve. As you go through the tour, professional photographers will take studio quality pictures and videos of your experience. If you choose to purchase the photo package, they will take $40 off the cost of your tour and of every person in your party. This will lower the price of each person in your group to $159. You will still pay for the pictures, but at least part of it will come off the tour cost. The local coupon books offer $20 off the price for each person in your group. Be sure to use those to make the price a bit more affordable.

One 8 x 10 picture per group will come with the price of your tour. What you would actually purchase would be the Photo CD at a cost of $125 if purchased in advance. The CD is a professional portfolio that includes pictures of each individual in the group with the animals, group pictures with the animals, candid shots of your group throughout the tour and pictures of the animals. So in the cost of the CD you will receive hundreds of photos, along with the right to reproduce them for printing. There will also be a Video DVD of your tour that costs $125, but if you purchase this along with the Photo CD, the cost is only an additional $25. So for $150 you will get both the CD and DVD. These prices only apply if you purchase them in advance of the day of your tour. The price goes up if purchased on the tour day. Yes, all the photos, videos and price of admission are expensive, but do remember that they use this as a means of raising money to support their endangered species friends.

Children must be at least 6 years old to go on the tour. You will not be able to bring cameras or cell phones. Be sure to leave jewelry such as bracelets and chains behind in a safe place. Also, do not wear white clothes, dresses or skirts, and do wear closed toe shoes.

This is a wonderful and rare opportunity to create a memory that will be treasured throughout the lives of you, your children, grandchildren and friends. T.I.G.E.R.S. has donated over $200,000 to the native homes of the tigers in Asia and Africa through their international conservation programs.
<div

These parks are actually two separate attractions. One look at the Amusement Park will instantly bring back fond memories of time spent at the local annual county fair. And it’s the only oceanfront amusement park in Myrtle Beach.

The really nice thing is that it does not cost anything to enter the park. So if parents want to come in and just let the kids ride, they only pay for what the kids do. There are several rides that are fun for older kids and adults. Those include the Yo-Yo, Thunderbolt, the 110-foot free fall Sling Shot Drop Zone, Hurricane and the wooden roller coaster. There are some who love to ride these over and over. Then there’s the ferris wheel, South Carolina’s highest, that provides a time to relax and enjoy the spectacular view over the ocean.

The park is family friendly and most of the more than thirty rides at Family Kingdom are designed for younger children, mainly ages 3-10. They have bumper cars, go-kart tracks, some spinning rides and the Log Flume.

Family Adventure Water Park is a wonderful way to cool down on those hot days. Spend hours relaxing while floating on the 425-foot lazy river. Get an extra dose of water as you pass by the waterfalls. Then there are the more thrilling rides with a variety of water slides and a water flume with a 100 foot drop. The younger kids will be excited with the rain trees, kiddie pools, a waterfall and eight kiddie slides.

There are a couple of ways to purchase the rides at Family Kingdom Amusement Park. If you’re only planning on riding a few rides, buying the ticket are the best value. Individual tickets are $1.05 each plus tax and rides range from 2-5 tickets each. They also have various ticket packages depending on how many you need. Young kids who will enjoy most of the rides usually do better with the all-day wrist bands that are $23.50 plus tax.

Before deciding to buy individual tickets or unlimited wristbands, you might want to walk around the park first to see how many rides each person in your group will ride. Those who choose just a few will want to go the ticket route, while those who find lots of rides will probably need the wristbands. You’ll save a lot of money this way. Some of the local tourist coupon books may have coupons to help save on your ticket prices.

All-day Water Park tickets are $18.95. The best value tickets for those planning to utilize both the Amusement Park and Water Park might be the Combo Pass for $33 plus tax. These passes allow one visit to each park that can be used on the same day or different days.

Check the times that each park is open on the days you are there. The Amusement Park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is sometimes only open after 4pm on weekdays and 1pm on weekends. So don’t be disappointed if you go earlier to find they’re not open yet. Nighttime is wonderful at the park. Not only is it cooler, but the lighted rides and the beach provide a beautiful atmosphere after dark.

Don’t go expecting the rides or amenities of a large amusement park, and you’ll have a great time. Young kids love it here and grown ups enjoy letting their inner kid come out.
<div

This show along with another popular production was selling out nightly, and in 1993, the two shows joined forces under the Carolina Opry name. With the combination of a new 2,200 seat theater located in Myrtle Beach and a fabulously entertaining presentation, it has remained a hit ever since.

The gorgeous Carolina Opry Theater in Myrtle Beach, SC is a sensational site to see. This 90-minute presentation features music from the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s. As the performers take the audience on a journey through the decades, music will pop up from Elvis, the Righteous Brothers, the Beatles and even KISS. They also devote a portion of the show to honor our war veterans, present and past.

Each of the shows has its own collection of spectacular costumes and original performances, along with state of the art lighting and sound. These productions have a wonderful way of combining older musical and entertainment traditions with the new and modern. The result is a tantalizing recreation that can be enjoyed by the young, old and all those in between.
